Kim Maree: Meet the Artists

These are the significant themes that move through my work via a semi sub-conscious passage:

Using pieces to make a whole and stitching is a dominant theme in my work which explores thoughts and ideas about home: our family of origin, ourselves and our new homes we attempt to create and re-create as we move through our lives.

Home for me is an investigation about the intimate space we hold in our own soul and body, along with our own families, and it also extends more loosely to our communities, countries, earth and world.

Associations:

Fragments/broken bits: pieces of me, pieces of you, pieces of us, pieces of the earth, pieces of our world.

Red: blood, violence.

Stitching: cuts, wounds, medical, hospital, emergency, trauma, domestic, home, mending, repairing, pulling together, healing.

Life: time............... "It’s not time that heals it’s what we do with that time"

How I work:

I like to make something out of nothing. It’s the broken bits and the fragments (parts of the whole) I am really drawn to and creating something from this that appeals to me, along with finding the creative edge within this and following it through experimentation and chance. This way of working can act like a window into something exciting that was previously unknown to me and open up a possibility that somehow I wouldn’t have found on my own, even though I am actually on my own in it. It seems like it is a way for me to take my self out of the work and it allows a space for the expansion of both the work and me. At its best I find something that interests me and I delight in and at its worst I start again!
